Whoop taps former Nike exec as CMO

Health app Whoop has named former Nike leader Dirk-Jan van Hameren as chief marketing officer.

Van Hameren comes to Whoop from Nike where he spent the last three decades. He started in the mailroom at the athletic brand’s European headquarters and most recently served as executive vice president and chief marketing officer, overseeing Nike’s global marketing organization.

“What attracted me to Whoop was the scale and importance of the opportunity,” said Van Hameren, in a statement. “The company has earned extraordinary credibility with elite athletes and built an incredibly engaged, global community of more than three million members. But I believe we’re still at the very beginning. Proactive health will become one of the defining categories of our generation. Whoop will build the global brand that defines it.”

In his new role, Van Hameren will be tasked with leading marketing for the health app, which is currently on a growth trajectory. The human performance brand, which helps members optimize sleep, recovery, strain and daily behaviors to improve health and performance, recently passed 3 million global members and raised $575 million at a $10.1 billion valuation. The app is available in 56 countries and has seen 11.3x growth in global membership since January 2023.
