United Airlines and NFL stars turn the tarmac into the runway

  • United Airlines celebrated the confluence of football and fashion seasons with a limited campaign touting its relationship with several NFL teams.
  • The brand, in partnership with agency 72andSunny, developed an out-of-home campaign, “Football Flies United,” that features notable players stepping off United planes in fashions that are game-day ready.
  • The effort features Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs), Rome Odunze (Chicago Bears), Kyle Juszczyk (San Francisco 49ers) and Jerry Jeudy (Cleveland Browns). All the players are depicted in their local markets. Each of the executions contains the headline, “Football Flies United.”

“Our north star is being relevant and responsive to what matters in our customers’ lives,” said Mike Wolf, manager of advertising & social media at United Airlines. “The NFL has never been more popular or a better representation of the people of each city than now. And as the airline of choice for these cities, we want to show up in a way that will connect with fans. The creative was inspired by what we’re seeing all season – players using game day travel with United to show off their style and personality. As the teams’ sponsor and charter airline, we are a part of every road trip, making United a game day ritual.”

The brand chose the markets to show up in strategically. “United is the top airline in each of these four markets and we fly the teams,” Wolf explained. “These are places where both United and the NFL are truly part of the community’s DNA. Chicago and San Francisco are United hubs, but they’re also cities with rich football traditions and incredibly passionate fan bases. Kansas City and Cleveland are legendary football towns with endless local pride.”

“United flies your favorite team, your favorite players and you,” he continued. “We’re fans like the rest of the city and not just a sponsor but a part of the game day experience. United is an integral part of the journey of the team just like it is for you, bringing you closer to your fandom.”
