- Papa Johns has signed on to Walmart’s new Express Restaurant Delivery service to offer Walmart shoppers restaurant pizza.
- Through the new partnership, Walmart shoppers can add a pizza to their order when checking out through the retailer’s app.
- Papa Johns is listed in the restaurants tab of the Walmart app and users can bundle a pizza order with groceries so that it is delivered at the same time as their store delivery, within 30 minutes of placing the order.
Following the likes of other big box retailers such as Costco, Target and Sam’s Club, Walmart has long offered non-grocery food options within its stores through partners including: McDonald’s and Subway.
Now the Arkansas-based retail giant is getting in on the food delivery action with this new option that promises to deliver a hot meal along with a store order within half an hour. The service aims to answer the question: what is for dinner tonight?
The partnership offers Papa John’s a growth opportunity as the brand looks to serve new customers who may not be familiar with the brand. “Walmart has a fairly large group of people across all cohorts, but specifically over index in value-oriented or lower household income consumers,” said Chris Lyn-Sue, global chief marketing officer at Papa Johns. “We think there’s an opportunity to showcase our amazing value, albeit with quality ingredients and elevated experiences, around our pizza to that group of consumers.”
Walmart added the service in July with a partnership with Subway, but Papa Johns will be the first national restaurant brand available through Walmart express delivery that is fulfilled entirely outside of their four walls at Papa John’s restaurants nearby.
“When people are shopping for their household essentials or groceries, they also want fresh prepared and obviously high quality fresh pizza delivered alongside of it,” said Lyn-Sue. “There’s times when I’m shopping physically or even in ecommerce and I should be cooking, but it’s nice to be able to have a pizza around with family and friends as I unpack the groceries. It’s just tapping into that natural human truth.”
The Walmart e-commerce channels are fulfilled by the Walmart Express delivery and drivers will pick up the pizzas from nearby restaurants on their way to deliver. Lyn-Sue said that the pricing would be very competitive compared to other third-party delivery apps.
Walmart will promote the new offering within its app and through its CRM system. “We’re excited about this partnership because of its an expansion of occasions where Papa John’s can deliver what we know best,” said Lyn-Sue.
