In a nod to the famous banana taped to a wall selling for $6 million, Frito Lay’s Cheetos brand has listed a single Cheetos Puff taped to a wall on eBay.
The listing, which ends on Thursday, has already generated 49 bids at over $1,000 in bids.
“Mischief by Chester” will include the art piece, as well as the equivalent amount of Cheetos as the final bid.
“Comedian,” by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, a banana duct taped to a wall, sold for $6 million at a Sotheby’s auction last week, after debuting at Art Basel in 2019. The banana sale has been trending on social media with many people making jokes about.
The Frito Lay brand is getting in on the conversation with this playful stunt.
“Sometimes the simplest idea is the best idea, and after we saw that a banana duct taped to a wall sold for $6.2 million at auction, it inspired one of our most mischievous and boundary-pushing brands, Cheetos,” said Flavia Simoes, senior director of marketing, PepsiCo Foods North America, in a statement shared with Brand Innovators. “This was a natural way to tap into a very topical cultural moment and excite our fans. So, we did just that, putting a single Cheetos Puff taped to a wall up for auction – and the reaction has been tremendous, with the bid currently over $1,000.”
“No shade to the prince of potassium, but we think we can do better, so we’re holding an auction of our own,” reads the Instagram post, which introduced the auction. “Seriously…one lucky person will receive a single Cheetos Puff and some tape.* The bidding is live. Let’s show that banana who’s boss. *In addition to this priceless piece of art, the winning bid will receive a supply of Cheetos in the amount equivalent to their bid.”
