- Google and the Pelé Brand, managed by NR Sports, have launched a new mini-documentary that reconstructs Pelé’s legendary 1959 “Gol da Rua Javari” – his most iconic goal that was never actually captured on film.
- ‘The Most Beautiful Goal Never Seen,’ shows how Google DeepMind used AI tools to reconstruct the event. The tech company worked with Pelé’s family, historians and eyewitnesses to feed details into Veo 3 and Gemini Omni to recreate the event in a reconstructed film.
- The mini-doc will be featured to the Pelé Museum later this year.
The World Cup is coming to a close this weekend but brands are still using the tentpole to tell soccer-related stories.
Google is working with the Pelé Brand to highlight how its AI tools can be used for meaningful storytelling at a time when soccer is on everyone’s minds.
“Pelé’s legacy must always be treated with care, respect, and responsibility,” said Neymar Santos Sr., founder and president of NR Sports, which manages Pelé Brand. “This project reflects exactly what Pelé Brand stands for: preserving his history, keeping his impact alive, and finding meaningful ways to introduce his genius to new generations. Together with Google, we are using innovation not to reinvent the past, but to help the world experience a real moment that was never captured on film.”
“Recreating the ‘lost’ goal of a legend like Pelé meant respecting the athleticism and artistry of football, something generative tools have struggled with,” added Doug Eck, senior research director at Google DeepMind. “To get it right, we used Performance Control to blend motion performance with historical and cultural archives from Pelé’s era, and worked with some of today’s best footballers as stunt players to further condition the models. These steps ensured the video felt true to life. This project reflects our long-standing approach: give artists the best generative tools to expand their craft and tell entirely new stories.”
