Fanta brings the fright with horror-themed packaging

  • Fanta, Universal and Blumhouse are collaborating on a Halloween promotion that will feature five modern horror film icons all on the hunt for the fruit-flavored soft drink.
  • The promo will depict the murderous doll Chucky, the deranged robot M3gan, Halloween’s Michael Myers, animatronic bear Freddy Fazbear and The Grabber from Black Phone on Fanta cans, packaging and other places, including factories and real-life experiences.
  • In addition to appearing on the cans of Fanta’s traditional flavors, the brand is releasing a limited-edition Chucky’s Punch flavor featuring the familiar scarred doll from the Chucky film franchise.

To promote the partnership, an online video brings four of the horror villains together in one place: a dark convenience store. In the ad, a young man heads to a cooler and grabs a can of Chucky’s Punch, only to be startled by Freddy Fazbear appearing immediately behind him as he closes the door. As the young man tries to escape, his path is cut off by M3Gan and The Grabber. An escape through a window is thwarted by Chucky, who, rather than torturing the young man, grabs the drink for a swig.

The limited-edition cans and packaging will also feature QR codes, allowing fans to access additional content and experiences related to the characters’ films and franchises. While the promo is tied to Halloween, Universal and Blumhouse are also set to release two films – Black Phone 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 – later this year, adding to the tie-in’s relevance.

“Fanta promises deliciousness, and only deliciousness. What better occasion to have a little fun with that than Halloween? The festival of tricks and treats,” said Ibrahim Salim Khan, Global VP, Fanta at The Coca-Cola Company, in a statement. “This Halloween, in a delicious, thrilling partnership with Universal Pictures and Blumhouse, we will bring back the most legendary horror icons for the first time ever.”
