Doritos brings some Stranger Things to the snack aisle - Brand Innovators

Doritos brings some Stranger Things to the snack aisle

  • As the anticipation builds for Stranger Things’ final fifth season on Netflix, Doritos has joined the marketing push, introducing two tie-ins with the 1980s-set show.
  • Coming soon, the brand will launch a new “Doritos Collisions” flavor, Stranger Pizza x Cool Ranch, celebrating both the 1980s pizza culture of Stranger Things and the launch of Cool Ranch Doritos, which hit store shelves in 1986.
  • The introduction of the pizza flavor is something fans have requested for some time, according to the company, which also noted that many consumers enjoy the flavors of ranch-dipped pizza.

The partnership with Netflix will give the brand an opportunity to be a part of an iconic moment in the culture for Gen Z: the final season of Stranger Things.

“[Pizza-flavored Doritos] is one of our top-requested flavors, and the launch of Stranger Things Season 5 felt like the perfect time to deliver,” said Tina Mahal, SVP of marketing at PepsiCo Foods US. “The new Doritos Collisions Stranger Pizza x Cool Ranch mash-up in its retro 80’s bag was designed to fit perfectly into 1987 Hawkins where pizza is a part of fan lore and Doritos Cool Ranch would have been one of the hottest new snacks.”

A second tie-in will be a Doritos Minis Spicy Sweet Chili, which will include glow-in-the-dark packaging. In addition, four of the brand’s classic flavors – Nacho Cheese, Cool Ranch, Sweet & Tangy BBQ and Spice Sweet Chili – will also have limited-time Stranger-Things themed packaging.

Stranger Things’ fifth season will drop in two parts in November and the final episodes in December.
