- Amika has dropped a new social-first campaign to support the launch of its biggest product of the year – the Protector Collection.
- Created in partnership with agency SHADOW, the campaign is focused on educational storytelling and social content that urges consumers to protect the color they invest in.
- The campaign aims to entertain while pushing the message that its new shampoo, conditioner, and treatment spray system is designed to protect hair color for up to 40 washes post dye.
Brand Innovators caught up with Nilofer Vahora, chief marketing officer of amika to talk about the new campaign.
What is the strategy behind the campaign?
With The Protector, the strategy was to turn a functional hair-care benefit into a more emotional idea: protecting the color investment people make in their hair, their self-expression, and their confidence. Color does not fade in the salon – it fades in real life, from showering, heat styling, UV exposure, chlorine, workouts, travel, and daily wear. The campaign makes that tension simple and memorable.
The collection gives us a clear system story: the shampoo and conditioner protect color where it fades most, in the shower, while the leave-in treatment acts as the everyday defense against real-life fade factors between appointments. That is why the campaign is treatment-led in creative, but system-backed in credibility.
Creatively, we brought that promise to life by personifying the product as The Protector – a confident, cool, knowledgeable big-sister figure who has your back. She extends the expertise people get from their stylist into the everyday moments when color is most at risk, making color care feel less intimidating and more effortless. The broader ambition is to establish amika as a modern color-care authority: clinically proven, stylist-backed, and consumer-friendly, but still joyful, expressive, and unmistakably amika.
Who are you hoping to reach with this effort?
We are focused on three key groups. First, stylists and colorists – the authority builders, educators, and validators in a high-trust category. They are critical because they are the people clients already rely on to protect the integrity of their color service after they leave the chair.
Second, our color investors: color clients ages 25 to 44 who value vibrancy, longevity, and ease between appointments. These are people who put real time, money, and emotion into their color, and they want a routine that helps that salon-fresh result last without feeling complicated or heavy.
Third, our vivacious vivids and expressive color clients: people with bold, high-maintenance, or highly personal color – from reds and brunettes to highlights, single-process color, and vivid shades – who need their shade to stay bright and their strands to stay strong. The common thread across all three is that color is more than a service. It is identity, confidence, and self-expression. The Protector is designed to help preserve that feeling between appointments, with a routine that is proven, easy to understand, and built for real life.
How are you working with the stylist community to get the message out?
Stylists are central to the launch because they are the credible bridge between product proof and client behavior. Consumers can discover The Protector through campaign storytelling, but stylists validate why the system works, how it should be used, and why it matters between appointments.
We built that credibility before launch through a pro-first testing and seeding approach with amika: backrooms. We gifted 300 organic stylists and brought 35 contracted stylist creators into early-access product testing with white-label lab samples. That allowed stylists to experience the system before the branded reveal and share a more authentic testing POV.
The content was designed to feel salon-rooted, not overly scripted. Each contracted stylist created multiple assets, building a library of creator content around protecting the color service, a system stylists can rely on, and maintaining client trust between appointments. After reveal, we connected those testing journeys back to the final Protector system and scaled the education through @amikapro, the pro community app, email, launch storytelling, consultation tools, retail conversation guides, and distributor-ready education assets. The goal is to turn clinical proof into language stylists can confidently use behind the chair.
We are also being transparent about amika's role: we do not make hair color, but we are investing in what protects it. That makes The Protector a partner to stylists – helping their work last longer and helping clients maintain vibrant, strong, salon-quality color at home.
