American Express Gold Card marks 60th anniversary with new consumer benefits

  • American Express’s iconic Gold Card has turned 60 and the brand is using the milestone to introduce new benefits to members.
  • The company now offers card members an Uber One membership credit, Hilton Honors Points Transfer Bonus, special travel offers at select properties in The Hotel Collection, as well as offers from Staud, HBO Max, Williams Sonoma, Vivid Seats, Hello Fresh and CLEAR.
  • The card carries a $325 annual membership.

The American Express Gold card launched in 1966 to cater to premium customers. The brand is using its milestone to remind customers of its benefits by adding rewards to membership.

“The 60th anniversary of the American Express Gold Card is a natural moment to celebrate our Card Members with new and enhanced benefits that reward dining, travel, and everyday spending – reflecting their growing appetite for experiences,” said Jake King, senior vice president, head of Amex Offers Digital Media

The company aims to attract new generations and drive loyalty through offers like these.

“Loyalty is built when a brand evolves with its customers, like Gold is doing now,” added King. “We’re seeing a significant demand for travel, particularly among younger generations. By increasing rewards like 5x Membership Rewards points on prepaid hotels booked via Amex Travel and adding Hertz Five Star status, we are adding real value between our typical 3-4-year card refresh cycles.”

The financial services brand hopes to drive relevance among its customer base to maintain membership.

“Relevance comes down to flexibility. We are focused on making sure the Gold Card is a recurring player in our Card Member’s lifestyles,” said King. “By constantly adding more partners – from heritage brands to lifestyle-forward additions like Staud, HBO Max and Uber One – we ensure the Gold Card remains a well-rounded option in the premium space. As long as we continue to evolve in the ways our card members are evolving, we’re confident the Gold Card will remain in their wallets for another six decades.”
