Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos unveils the Fire Phone at a special event in Seattle.

As mobile purchases continue to grow, online sales leader Amazon has debuted a new smart phone geared to enhancing the shopping experience.

Introduced yesterday at an Amazon media event in Seattle, the Fire Phone offers “Dynamic Perspective” that will allow for a tilt-based 3D perspective that will enable easy viewing of items from different angles. The feature, also popular in gaming, is already being used to limited extent on various mobile shopping sites. Its standard integration into Fire Phone seems to point to the future of e-tail and promises “a new class of immersive apps and games” and, presumably, shopping interactions. Specs for the Android-compatible Fire Phone — set to ship in July available exclusively from AT&T — can be found here. Some are already skeptical about the device’s ultimate market success, citing high cost and late entry to the market. But regardless of the fate of the Fire Phone in particular, we predict this type of 3-D product view, being developed by Intel and others, will become a stardard in mobile devices, to the benefit of sellers everywhere.

A “Firefly” button on the side of the phone allows users to jump quickly to various products and services. An added neat feature — text scrolls by tilting the phone, no touch or drag required.

Mobile purchases as a percentage of online retail sales grew from 15% in 2013 to what is tracking to be 21% in 2014 and is projected at 24% in 2016 for smartphones and tablets combined, according to eMarketer.com.
